Former Dallas Maverick JJ Redick Named Head Coach of Los Angeles Lakers
JJ Redick has been appointed as the new head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, as reported by ESPN insider Adrian Wojnarowski. Redick takes over from Darvin Ham, who was dismissed after two seasons despite leading the Lakers to the Western Conference Finals in 2023 and a first-round playoff exit in 2024.
Redick was a leading candidate for the role, with multiple reports suggesting the Lakers' strong interest. Although Mavs fans might not recall, Redick concluded his 15-year NBA career with a 13-game stint at the Dallas Mavericks following a trade from the New Orleans Pelicans. He retired in September of the following year.
Post-retirement, Redick found success as the host of the popular basketball podcast “Old Man and the Three” and as a commentator and announcer for ESPN. In 2024, he launched another podcast, “Mind the Game,” with Lakers superstar LeBron James, focusing on NBA strategy. It remains uncertain whether this podcast will continue now that Redick has taken up the coaching position.
Despite his extensive NBA playing experience, Redick has no prior coaching experience at any level. The Lakers job marks his first foray into a high-profile coaching role.
