Orange Grove ISD Welcomes New Head Football Coach and Athletic Director, Jared Johnston
Orange Grove Independent School District has made a significant announcement that sees a former student returning to lead its sports programs. Jared Johnston, who graduated from Orange Grove in 1991, has been appointed as the new head football coach and athletic director. The appointment was made official during a special board meeting on Tuesday, as confirmed by Superintendent Eddie Hesseltine.
Johnston returns to the Bulldogs with a commendable record from his 12 years at the helm of the Clemens Buffaloes in the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD in San Antonio. His leadership saw the team through six playoff appearances and a district championship in 2019. His 2015 squad notably advanced to the regional final, boasting an 11-3 season.
Having spent over two decades within the SCUCISD, Johnston served as offensive coordinator at Cibolo Steele under Coach Mike Jinks before taking over at Clemens. His long-term experience and track record of success were key factors in his selection.
His connection to Orange Grove, both as an alumnus and a former multi-sport athlete, played a significant role in his appointment. Johnston, who also played collegiate football at Northwestern State, is well-remembered in the community for his athletic contributions during his school years.
Superintendent Hesseltine emphasized Johnston's comprehensive approach to sports management, highlighting his desire to elevate all programs, for both boys and girls, starting from seventh grade. Johnston's commitment to the development of young athletes and the overall sports culture within the community stands as a central element of his vision.
Johnston fills the vacancy left by Brent Kornegay, who recently accepted a similar position at Three Rivers. Last season, under Kornegay's guidance, the Bulldogs achieved a 7-5 record and qualified for the playoffs in District 15-4A Division II. With the school transitioning to Class 3A for the upcoming two years, Johnston's leadership is timely.
The district has scheduled a meet and greet with Coach Johnston for the community on May 8 at 4 p.m. at the school’s indoor facility. This event will offer a chance for community members to engage with Johnston and hear about his plans for invigorating the Bulldogs' sports programs.
